The Design Story of Arden and Sandstone.

Arden

A collaboration from a design originated by Ian Redfern, Arden cutlery was inspired by the elongated form of our bestselling Arden candlesticks. The slender, pure lines with the appearance of an impossibly thin waist detail, appear so delicate that they almost defy belief. This idea of cutlery that could appear ‘strand thin’ became the challenge for the Robert Welch design team.

The Arden cutlery range was launched in 2015 and soon became an award-winning design, not only for its pure aesthetic but also the ingenious engineering that was incorporated, to ensure that the pieces were comfortable in the hand. The key detail to this success, was the ‘hidden’ depth of the knife bolster area, which gave the user a broader area to grip.

Sandstone

Head of Design Kit DeBretton Gordon had the idea to apply a ‘sand-like’ texture, to the handles of the Arden pieces. Her idea was inspired by the natural stone of the local cottages in the Cotswolds, with their weathered texture.

Each handle features a unique stippled effect, on both sides, which adds a comfortable soft feel in the hand.

IONA & SKYE CUTLERY

The Design Story of Iona and Skye.

In 2005, Paul de Bretton Gordon, our Design Director, designed the Iona cutlery range, which has gone on to become one of Robert Welch’s bestselling signature designs.

In 2019 the Design Team felt that we could offer something really special to enhance the surface of the pieces and it was decided to really push the boundaries of manufacturing. By replicating the techniques of the Silversmith, applying these to stainless steel, a truly unique design was born. The Skye cutlery range uses the technique of ‘long hammer planishing’ to compliment the clean lines of the handles of each piece. The final detail was the application of fading the texture near the bolster, to give a considered hand applied feel.
