Product Safety

All of our stainless steel products are made using the high-quality grades of stainless steel which are globally recognised ‘food safe’ materials (GRAS) and FDA food safe compliant.

Robert Welch Cutlery and stainless steel Signature Utensils

Our table forks and spoons are made from 18/10 (304) stainless steel and our table knives from 13/0 (420) stainless steel to ensure the required hardness. Our stainless steel Signature Utensils are also made from 18/10 (304) stainless steel.

Robert Welch Signature and Professional knives

All our kitchen knives are made using the highest quality X50 CrMoV15 German DIN 1.4116 stainless steel fully forged from a single piece of steel with a full tang for incredible strength and balance. The blades are hardened to Rockwell 56, for ease of maintenance.

During the manufacture of the steel itself, the metal is repeatedly analysed to ensure it is of the required quality. We also sample test and analyse our products, by production facility and material, to International Standards to ensure our stainless steel is of the highest quality that we, and our customers, expect. These standards are ISO EN 8442-1 and 8442-2, which includes a detailed metals analysis.

We always use CATRA (Cutlery and Allied Trade Research Association) to undertake our testing and analysis to ISO standards. CATRA was established in Sheffield, England in 1952 and is still based there in the historic heart of British steel production. Specialising in investigations into stainless steels, manufacturing methods and product and performance testing, CATRA has over 60 years of experience and has amassed a wealth of specialised technical knowledge. Its team of qualified and experienced engineers and scientists work in fully equipped purpose-built laboratories to test and analyse our products.

CATRA is the world-renowned expert in flatware and knife testing and was closely involved in developing and writing the applicable ISOs. CATRA is not a testing house which tests every form of product; CATRA is the specialist in its field with an unparalleled reputation for expertise and excellence.
